More than 300 scouts will earn the new medicine merit badge after spending a day with health care professionals at Sierra Medical Center and Providence Memorial Hospital. The Yucca Boy Scout Council and Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande will bring several troops to each hospital on May 1 and 8, 2004.

On May 1, 2004, Sierra Medical Center will host an all day event starting at 9:00 a.m. for Boy Scout troops. Cub scouts will also be involved in a half-day event from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The scouts will work with Sierra staff members from various departments including surgery, emergency, pharmacy, and laboratory to learn about the health care field. Afterwards, Boy Scout troops will be tested on the day’s activities to earn their medicine merit badge.

On May 8, 2004, Girls Scouts will be at Providence Memorial Hospital from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brownie troops will participate in a half-day teddy bear clinic where they will learn about first aid, respiratory services, and physical therapy programs as well as other hospital services. Girls from 5th to 12th grade will shadow nurses, therapists and technicians throughout the day.
