Among the many challenges facing premature infants is a potentially blinding eye disorder called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Premature and low birth weight infants are at risk for ROP because the blood vessels supplying the retinas are not completely developed and continue to grow in an abnormal disorganized pattern. If undiagnosed, ROP may lead to bleeding, scarring of the retina, retinal detachment and visual loss.
A retinal imaging system (RetCam) available through Providence Memorial Hospital may help physicians detect disease by allowing a closer look at the well being of premature babies.
RetCam is a mobile, self-contained system that provides advanced Wide-Field Pediatric Retinal Imaging. The machine allows for a greater viewing area of the eyes, and helps keep the scanning to a minimum. The image as well as the patient record is saved as a digital file that can be transferred electronically.
The RetCam may also be used to diagnose other diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, retinoblastoma, as well as Shaken Baby Syndrome. The machine has been in used since August 2004. While newborns who are at risk are tested, the machine can also be used on adults.
