October 2, 2006

Sierra Providence Health Network (SPHN) is pleased to announce that Providence Memorial Hospital has been recognized with a 5-Star rating for clinical excellence in maternity care for the third consecutive year from HealthGrades, the nation’s leading source for independent healthcare quality information. In addition, Providence Memorial Hospital ranked in the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for maternity care, and has been recognized with HealthGrades 2006/2007 Maternity Care Excellence Award. To commemorate this event we will be having a celebration on Monday, October 2, 2006 from 2pm-4pm at Providence Memorial Hospital at the Hilton Tower Auditoriums A & B. Award presentation will begin promptly at 2:15 p.m.

The 2006/2007 HealthGrades programmatic ratings for maternity care are based on the following criteria: in-hospital complication rates associated with vaginal and cesarean deliveries, in-hospital volume, neonatal mortality, and complication rates for non-indicated or patient choice ceasarean sections.

“It’s an honor to be ranked among the top hospitals in the country for maternity care by an independent source such as HealthGrades,” said Irene Chavez COO of Providence Memorial Hospital. “The award represents the dedication of our staff and physicians to our patients.”

For its 2006/2007 rating, HealthGrades independently analyzed the quality of maternity care for more than 1,400 hospitals across 17 states make this information publicly available, objectively assessing their clinical performance and quality over the three year period from 2002 – 2004. The four criteria measured were weighted using predetermined weights based on consensus from a physician panel. Each factor’s percentile score was multiplied by its weight and then summed to create an overall score. Based upon each hospital’s overall score, HealthGrades applied the following rating system.

***** Best – Top 15% of all hospitals within 17 states
*** Average – Middle 70% of all hospitals within 17 states
* Poor – Bottom 15% of all hospitals within 17 states

Receiving a 5 – Star designation indicates a hospital has scored in the top 15% or better in the nation for clinical quality.

“Each year, HealthGrades assesses hospital quality and publishes every hospital’s ratings online,” explained Samantha Collier, M.D., HealthGrades’ vice president of medical affairs. “Three million people visit healthgrades.com each month in order to determine the hospitals in their communities that provide the highest quality care. Women in El Paso should be aware of the information available regarding healthcare quality and the outstanding recognition received by Providence Memorial Hospital’s maternity care,” Collier added.

The complete maternity care ratings are published, free of charge, on the HealthGrades Web site, www.healthgrades.com. Ratings for 28 other medical procedures and diagnoses – including cardiac, pulmonary, vascular, stroke, orthopedics, critical care and gastrointestinal services are also available on the HealthGrades Web site.
