Sierra Providence Health Network (SPHN) is pleased to announce that The Providence Diabetes Center and the El Paso Diabetes Association (EPDA) will collaborate together to fight the diabetes epidemic in El Paso. They will work closely to promote the prevention, education, and management of diabetes.
In combating this increasing problem, both entities will be housed at Providence Memorial Hospital located at 2101 N. Oregon. Patients will now be able to access programs and education on diabetes management at one location, making it a one stop shop for everyone while offering a more comprehensive approach to the community.
In El Paso, we have a disproportionate rate of risk factors in the population such as being Hispanic, obese, lack of exercise, and a strong family history. In fact, Type 2 diabetes, which used to occur primarily in older adults, is now developing in children as young as 4 and 5 years of age in our community. The impact of this early onset of diabetes will undoubtedly stress our healthcare system in years to come, not to mention the human cost in terms of psychological and physical suffering.
By having this strong partnership they are assuring a stronger commitment to making a difference in our community and making it easier for physicians, and patients to access information and programs about this disease.
“Both entities have a long standing presence in El Paso, making this a natural progression to address this problem and improve the quality of life for the residents in the Borderplex,” said Irene Chavez COO of Providence Memorial Hospital.
The El Paso Diabetes Association has 37 years of commitment as the only independent, not-for-profit diabetes association in the state of Texas. They offer programs that include gestational diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, screenings, diabetes detection, prevention programs, programs for seniors, support groups, cooking classes, coalition building groups, exercise classes, individualized meal plans, cholesterol, full lipid, HbA1c, and glucose screenings, camps for children and teens, diabetes management and control classes. The El Paso Diabetes Association also donates diabetes medication and supplies to clients in need.
Providence Memorial Hospital has also been a champion in combating this disease for about 10years. As a result, the Providence Diabetes Center has been recently granted ADA recognition. In order to meet and maintain that recognition they are held to certain standard and are required that a registered nurse and dietician be on staff. The Providence Diabetes Center offers comprehensive educational classes on gestational, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, in an individual or group setting. In addition, they offer free blood glucose screenings to the community every week. In an effort to work closer with physicians the center also has a system for continuing glucose monitoring, this gives the physicians a valuable evaluation tool that enhances the ability to adjust medication according to the patients needs. For more information please call Letty Van Osten RN, CDE at the Providence Diabetes Center at 577-6019/577-6789 or the El Paso Diabetes Association at 532-6280. |
