Special Care For You and Your Baby Both obstetrics departments at Sierra and Providence offer special services designed specifically to meet your individual birthing preferences, educational demands and intensive care needs. Please select the hospital you prefer to review a list of special OB services available: Special Care at Providence - Early Discharge Program
For those mothers and newborns who are discharged within 24 to 36 hours of giving birth and who reside in El Paso County, a follow-up home visit is made within 24 hours by an R.N. from the Providence Mother-Baby Nursing Department. For those residing outside El Paso County, a status report is taken from the mother by telephone. - High Risk Pregnancy Program
Women with diabetes, heart conditions or other special health conditions are at a higher risk for developing complications before, during and after pregnancy. Providence's Perinatal Diagnostics Center gives frequent and personal attention to at-risk women and the babies they're expecting through the High Risk Pregnancy Program. Working with your own doctor, our goal is to help you have a healthy pregnancy, a normal delivery and to help your baby avoid newborn intensive care at birth. To receive a free informational brochure on this program, please call (915) 577-6000. - Kangaroo Care
Providence also offers "Kangaroo Care," a special program that may help promote quicker recovery for pre-term or high-risk newborns through physical bonding. Studies have shown that babies who experience skin-to-skin contact with their mothers and/or fathers may have quicker recovery and better growth. You, your partner and baby may participate in the program. We will arrange screens for your privacy. Ask your nurse for more information. - Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery
Providence Memorial Hospital offers comprehensive neonatal intensive care for premature and critically ill babies. The hospital has arranged to have neonatologists available on an on-call basis who work together with our neonatal staff including: specially trained registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists and a social worker. Babies requiring intensive or specialized treatment are transferred to this intensive care nursery. Providence also offers a parental support group that gives assurance and reassurance through telephone contact, informational literature and educational programs. Please ask your nurse for more information on this support group. - Mother-Baby Nursing Program
Providence offers you another birthing option designed to maximize the time you and your baby spend together during your hospital stay. Under the Mother-Baby Nursing Program, your healthy newborn can stay in the hospital room with you, rather than in the nursery, and the same nurse will be dedicated to caring for you both. Nurses and lactation specialists are also available to teach you how to breast feed your baby, provide instruction on general baby care and answer any other questions you may have. To receive a free informational brochure on this program, please call (915) 577-6000. - Newborn Channel
Welcome to 24-hour educational programming right in your own maternity room. During your stay at Providence, you can tune into the Newborn Channel on your television and get helpful information on a wide range of topics including breast feeding, good parenting skills, infant safety, postpartum care and more. Programs are shown four times a day for your convenience. Ask your nurse for a free programming schedule. - Outpatient Breast Feeding Clinic
Providence also promotes and supports breast feeding. After hospital discharge, lactation consultants are available by appointment in the Breast Feeding Clinic to help with breast feeding problems, answer questions and check your baby's progress with breast feeding. Special Care at Sierra
